My ideal Mother's Day would be one of quiet and lack of any and all responsibility. My husband does his duty each year with thoughtful gifts and cards. And I appreciate that. My kids, as of yet, do nothing. Okay they brought my a couple of cute things they made at school. But, they don't really get it.
I guess this "holiday" was set in to motion by some man trying to get out of the dog house. It sounds all wonderful- a day for moms. To adore and appreciate and fall all over them with your unwavering love. But then I became a mother. It's not nearly as glamorous as it once seemed. I do not know if this will get better as the kids get older. For now, it's just another day for me.
I still wake up to someone crying/screaming. Two seconds cannot pass without one of the four saying "Mom" and asking for something. Kids still puke; whether it's supposed to be my day off or not. Diapers do not wait.
So, if it's the thought that counts, this holiday is a good idea. In practice, I think it's lacking for a mother with small children.
One CAN enjoy it though. My theory on this has nothing to do with flowers and cards and such.
1)Because I'm the mom, I make sure there is something frozen to cook for the family. My kids eat so little good food anyway, on this day, I will give them what they want. Frozen pizza.
2) I skip church (another man's idea to put it on a Sunday). The regular Sunday is not "restful" for a mom. It is equally, if not more, stressful than every other day of the week. So, I skip it. The fighting with kids about going. The dressing multiple people. The trying to make it through that longest 70-75 minutes of the week. It works for me. I'm a much more enjoyable person without worrying about all that stuff. Or you could just go by yourself and actually listen.
3) This one is hard. Try not to expect anything to be different just because people are saying it's a holiday. Like I mentioned, my husband does fine. It's the kids. They are just the same as the were yesterday, and tomorrow. Keep the expectations for them low, and you'll be happy if the close the door while using the bathroom.
There you go; three ideas for enjoying your Mother's Day. And you, as the mom, have control over them. (If nothing else.) I do love my kids. I just didn't realize how difficult being a mom would actually be. On so many different levels. It's hard just to remember that "mom" is not all that I am. I was once a woman and a wife. Somehow, this 24/7 mother thing overshadows who I once was.
But, I do love my kids (as they come screaming up the stairs right now). I have what I wanted and worked for; an eternal family (or at least a chance at it). I just hope they love me after living with me.

Happy Mother's day, my friend.
I guess my 'gift' was the kids actually cooperating in getting ready for church. It helps we don't go until 1pm.
