The Power of Bribery

Yesterday morning, I say offhand,"Hey guys, why don't you make your beds and pick up your rooms." (For the record, their rooms were not too dirty. Just messy beds and a few items of clothing on the floor.)

Nothing. They continue playing.

A few minutes later I say, "Make your beds and clean up your rooms."

Same, just playing.

"Get in there and clean your rooms!"

They haven't missed a beat yet.

"Make your beds and I'll give you a pumpkin treat."

Suddenly, I hear, "Hey, let's make our beds...Mom says she'll give us a treat."

Done. ("If you clean your room, I'll give you two.")
